The UGI-CSTEM program is funded through a National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM grant. The NSF S-STEM (Scholarship program for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) was established in accordance with the American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act of 1998 which reflects the national need to increase substantially the number of American scientists and engineers.
The UGI-CSTEM program is a joint program with the University of Houston with the following goals: (1) Increase recruitment and, retention of Computer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students at UHD with a special focus on academically talented students who demonstrate financial need, (2) Enhance the undergraduate learning environment at UHD to produce high quality and highly competitive undergraduate/ graduate students, and (3) Strengthen transition programs to facilitate successful transfer from UHD to graduate school and to the workforce.
The UGI-CSTEM program provides scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per academic year, depending on student financial need and academic potential. In additional to the financial support, the program offers the following benefits to scholarship recipients:
